Florida Fingerprinting Process

Step 1: If you are getting a background check for an agency or an employer, you must obtain an ORI number.

The ORI number (Originating Agency Identifier) is a number established by the Government and identifies the agency or employer requesting the criminal history check and for what purpose. You will need to obtain the correct ORI code from your employer.

Step 2: Fill out the on-line application.

You will need to create an account in our system and supply some basic identity information such as name and date/place of birth. At this time, you will also pay for the service. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. The exception is if you have an employer billing code.

Step 3: Schedule your fingerprinting appointment.

For Florida Department of Law Enforcement background checks, DTIS provides electronic fingerprint services ("live scan") at a convenient The UPS Stores location across the state of Florida. You can find your nearest location and schedule appointments here.

Step 4: Visit a DTIS partner location to be fingerprinted.

When you go for your fingerprinting appointment you will need to bring a government issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, military ID, etc.).

If the name or address differs on any of your identity documents, you will need to bring other documents that explain the difference and you may be required to modify your application when you arrive to be fingerprinted.

Step 5: Results.

For Florida Department of Law Enforcement background checks, you must contact your requesting agency for information concerning your report. DTIS does not receive your report and cannot provide it to you.
