Four Steps to Your FBI Background Check

  Register Online

  Create your secure DTIS account and complete the online application. You’ll provide basic identification information and submit payment during registration. DTIS accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

  Have a billing or access code? Payment may not be required at checkout. Register your account.

  Choose Your Location and Time

  Once registration is complete, select a DTIS partner location near you, then choose your preferred date and appointment time. Find a location.

  Attend Your Appointment

  Bring your Application Identifier (provided at the end of registration and on your confirmation) along with two forms of identification.

  One must be a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or state-issued ID. The second must show your name and current address, such as a recent utility bill, bank statement, or other official document.

  The name on your DTIS application must match your photo ID exactly. Any discrepancy may delay processing.

  Receive Your Results

  FBI background check results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. You’ll receive an email notification when your results are ready.

  • Check your spam or junk folder if you don’t see the notification in your inbox
  • You have 30 days to access your results once posted. After 30 days, results are permanently deleted
  • Download or print your results immediately upon access
  • To receive results by mail instead, select the “I do not have a phone available” option and confirm your mailing address during registration
