Many fingerprinting locations require applicants to wear a mask at all times during the fingerprinting process. If you do not wear a mask, you may not be able to get your fingerprints taken.
Applying for your own background check is easy – you’ll simply follow the process outlined below:
Step 1: If you are getting a background check for an agency or an employer, you must obtain an ORI number
The ORI number (Originating Agency Identifier) is a number established by the Government and identifies the agency or employer requesting the criminal history check and for what purpose. You will need to obtain the correct ORI code from your employer.
Step 2: Fill out the on-line application
You will need to supply some basic identity information such as name and date/place of birth. At this time you will also pay for the service. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
Step 3: Schedule your fingerprinting appointment
For Florida Department of Law Enforcement background checks, DTIS provides electronic fingerprint services ("live scan") at a convenient The UPS Stores location across the state of Florida. You can find your nearest location and schedule appointments here.
For FBI DO rap sheets, you will not schedule an appointment and mail via USPS to DTIS at 10201 Fairfax Boulevard, Suite 470, Fairfax, Virginia 22030.
Step 4: Visit The UPS Store or Law Enforcement to be fingerprinted
When you go for your fingerprinting appointment you will need to bring a government issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, military ID, etc.).
If the name or address differs on any of your identity documents you will need to bring other documents that explain the difference and you may be required to modify your application when you arrive to be fingerprinted.
Step 5: Retrieve your Report
If you are getting your Florida Department of Law Enforcement background check, you must contact your requesting agency for information concerning your report. DTIS does not receive your report and cannot provide it to you.
If you are are getting your FBI Rap Sheet, you will be notified by email when your report is available for retrieval (usually within 24 hours of being fingerprinted). You will login to the DTIS results portal and will then be asked to enter a One-Time-Passcode (OTP) that will be sent to your phone. You will then be prompted to download the report to your computer. If you don't have access to a phone that is registered in your name, the report will be mailed to your home address. Please note, in order to comply with FBI regulations you must retrieve your report within 30 days. After that, the report will be deleted. If you failed to retrieve your report within the allotted time frame DTIS will not refund your Double Check fee
