Step 1: Create a DTIS Account
Step 2: Complete the FD-258 Fingerprint Cards
- Obtain two sets of physical fingerprint cards (FD-258) for submission (usually provided by the agency fingerprinting you). These can be inked or electronic scans printed on the cards. Note: Self-inked fingerprints are not accepted by the FBI; they must be done by a fingerprint technician.
- Visit a local law enforcement agency (police or sheriff's office) to get your fingerprints taken. Contact the agency beforehand to ensure they can perform the service and have the required FD-258 cards. Some locations may not offer fingerprinting services to the public or may charge a fee. If you have trouble finding an agency, try shipping/mailing stores or college/university campus police departments.
- Fill out all fields (Name, DOB, SS#, etc.), and enter "N/A" for any field that doesn't apply. Sign where indicated. The official taking your fingerprints must also sign. Under "Reason Fingerprinted," write "FBI Departmental Order".
- Mail one completed FD-258 fingerprint card and a copy of your confirmation page from the online registration to: DTIS, 10201 Fairfax Blvd, Suite 470, Fairfax, VA 22030
- Keep the second fingerprint card in case your fingerprints are rejected by the FBI. Once we receive your fingerprints, standard processing time is approximately five business days.
Step 3: Access your FBI Results
- You have 30 days to access your results once they are posted. After 30 days, results are deleted from the system. Access your results electronically only when you can print/save them immediately.
- You will receive an email notification when your results are ready, including a link to log in to your DTIS account. Upon logging in, follow the instructions to view and download your results.
- If you prefer to receive results via mail, select the "I do not have a phone available" link and confirm your mailing address.
- For assistance with registration or retrieving results, contact DTIS at 703.797.2562.
